Chapter 11 - Dinner With Nolan

Nolan arrived at seven.
I didn’t tell him what I knew.
We ate steak.
Discussed Singapore.
Talked about markets.
Finally I mentioned Vanessa.
“She’s been stressed.”
“Marriage trouble?”
“Maybe.”
Nolan cut his food carefully.
“Wouldn’t surprise me.”
“Why?”
“You travel too much.”
Same criticism Vanessa used.
Interesting.
I poured wine.
“You lend her money?”
His fork stopped.
One second.
Then continued.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
Nolan smiled.
“Why would I lend Vanessa money?”
I slid a loan agreement across the table.
His name.
Her shell company.
$4.6 million.
Nolan leaned back.
“You searched her finances.”
“I searched mine.”
“She asked for help.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“She said you’d overreact.”
“What was the money for?”
“Investments.”
I watched him.
“Did you know about the conservatorship plan?”
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But I knew my brother.
“Yes,” I said quietly.
“You knew.”
Nolan stood.
“This conversation is ridiculous.”
“Sit down.”
“I’m not one of your employees.”
“No. You’re apparently my wife’s creditor.”
He turned toward the door.
I said:
“The acquisition gives temporary voting authority to Vanessa if I’m declared incapacitated.”
Nolan stopped.
May you like
That was enough.
