Chapter 22 - Lucas Comes Back
Lucas turned himself in through an attorney.
He had fled because he feared Vanessa would blame the forgery operation on him.
He surrendered old hard drives.
Those drives contained the most damaging evidence yet.
Vanessa had asked him repeatedly for sample documents.
At first she claimed she was helping a friend in a legal dispute.
Later she admitted they involved me.
Lucas refused to forge signatures.
So Vanessa learned to do it herself.
She practiced.
Hundreds of times.
My name filled scanned notebook pages.
Adrian Hale.
Adrian T. Hale.
A. T. Hale.
My signature becoming more accurate line by line.
One page contained Nolan’s signature too.
Vanessa had been preparing to use both of us.
Lucas also revealed one final detail.
“There’s another trust document.”
Miriam frowned.
“What document?”
“Something Vanessa found in Adrian’s safe.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
“She photographed it.”
“What was it?”
Lucas hesitated.
