Chapter 23 - Emily’s Letter

Maya’s biological mother was named Emily.
She died when Maya was three.
Before her final surgery, Emily created a separate trust for Maya.
I knew that.
What I didn’t know was that she included a private letter to future trustees.
Miriam located the original in archived records.
Emily had written:
No future spouse of Adrian should gain unilateral control over Maya’s inheritance.
Not because Emily distrusted me.
Because she wanted Maya protected if life changed.
The trust held shares in a company Emily’s family had founded.
Those shares had become enormously valuable.
Maya’s trust was worth nearly $38 million.
Vanessa knew.
Suddenly her focus on guardianship made even more sense.
If I were declared incompetent and Vanessa became Maya’s primary legal guardian, she could petition for influence over the trust administration.
Not automatic ownership.
But access.
Leverage.
Fees.
Control.
Vanessa hadn’t just targeted me.
May you like
She had targeted Maya’s future.
