Chapter 29 - Maya’s New Rule

Nearly a year after I came home early, Maya walked into my office carrying a piece of paper.
“I made house rules.”
I smiled.
“Should I be nervous?”
“Yes.”
She placed it on my desk.
The handwriting was enormous.
RULE ONE: KIDS DON’T CLEAN BIG BATHROOMS.
I laughed.
“Approved.”
RULE TWO: DADDY HAS TO ANSWER PHONE.
“Approved.”
RULE THREE: NOBODY SAYS SECRET THINGS ABOUT HOSPITAL.
My smile disappeared.
I crouched beside her.
“That’s a very good rule.”
Then the final one:
RULE FOUR: IF SOMETHING FEELS SCARY, TELL SOMEBODY.
I looked at her.
“Who taught you that?”
“My counselor.”
“She’s smart.”
Maya nodded seriously.
“Smarter than you.”
“Probably.”
She hugged me.

This time there was no flinch.
