Chapter 14 - Maya Remembers the Man

Children don’t remember events like adults.

They remember shoes.

Voices.

Smells.

Tiny details.

Maya couldn’t describe Lucas well.

But when Miriam showed her a lawful set of family photographs, Maya pointed immediately.

“That’s laundry man.”

Lucas.

“Why laundry man?” I asked.

“He brought bags.”

“What bags?”

“White ones.”

“When?”

“When Mommy said you were at hospital.”

Six months ago.

During my final cardiology observation visit.

“What was inside?”

“Paper.”

“Did he go into my office?”

“Yes.”

There it was.

Lucas had entered the house while I was at the hospital.

Possibly copied everything in the safe.

Possibly replaced records later.

Then Maya said:

“He got mad at Mom.”

“What did he say?”

She thought carefully.

“He said, ‘Nolan didn’t agree to this.’”

I froze.

Lucas knew Nolan.

The question was whether Nolan had been partner, target—or both.
