Chapter 28 - Vanessa Tells the Truth

Months later Vanessa entered a plea related to financial fraud and document forgery.

The family proceedings remained separate.

During one hearing, she was asked why she involved Maya.

For once, Vanessa did not blame anyone else.

“Because Maya loved her father.”

The courtroom became silent.

“And that was a problem?” the attorney asked.

Vanessa looked down.

“She would have contradicted the story.”

“What story?”

“That Adrian was unstable.”

“So you taught her to remain silent?”

“Yes.”

“Why the chores?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“I wanted her tired. Busy. Obedient.”

I closed my eyes.

There was no dramatic revelation after that.

No hidden innocence.

No last-minute explanation that made everything understandable.

Sometimes the truth is terrible precisely because it is simple.

Vanessa wanted control.

And she treated anyone standing between herself and that control as something to manage.
