Chapter 7 - Victoria’s First Statement

Detectives questioned Victoria until after midnight.

Her attorney arrived before she gave a formal statement.

But she admitted one thing.

Emma had survived.

I met Victoria the following morning at the police station with lawyers present.

She looked exhausted.

“Why?”

She stared at me.

“Because I loved you.”

“No.”

Her eyes filled.

“I did.”

“People don’t erase someone because they love another person.”

“You don’t understand.”

“Then explain.”

Victoria wiped her face.

“When Emma survived, Richard contacted me.”

“Why you?”

“Because I was at the hospital.”

“Why?”

“I followed the ambulance.”

I froze.

“You were near the accident?”

“Yes.”

That detail had never appeared in the police report.

Victoria had been Emma’s close friend then.

One of her bridesmaids.

After Emma’s death, Victoria had comforted me.

Three years later we began dating.

Now even that history felt contaminated.

“Richard said Emma was confused and that the company couldn’t survive a scandal.”

“What scandal?”

Victoria looked away.

“That’s when everything became complicated.”

“What scandal?”

She whispered:

“Emma had discovered what Richard was doing before the accident.”
