Chapter 26 - The Courtroom

Richard eventually appeared in court.
He looked smaller without corporate offices and assistants surrounding him.
Prosecutors presented financial records.
Hospital correspondence.
Funeral documents.
Trust transfers.
Margaret’s testimony.
Nora’s records.
Victoria’s messages.
Emma did not need to relive every year publicly.
Her attorneys handled most of it.
When asked whether she wished to make a statement, Emma stood.
She did not speak about money.
She spoke about time.
“You can return property.”
The courtroom was silent.
“You can reverse transactions. You can correct documents.”
She looked toward Richard.
“But nobody can return my daughter’s first five years with her father.”
Then she sat down.
That was all.

It was enough.
