Chapter 27 - Victoria’s Last Letter

Victoria sent me one letter.
I almost destroyed it.
Emma told me to read it only if I wanted to.
I did.
Victoria apologized.
Not elegantly.
Not perfectly.
She admitted jealousy had become entitlement.
At first she helped Richard because she feared scandal.
Later she continued because Emma’s absence created a life she secretly wanted.
Then every new lie required another.
She wrote:
I kept telling myself the next lie would be the last one. Eventually the lies became the only life I had left.
I folded the letter.
Emma asked:
“Does it change anything?”
“No.”
“Good or bad?”
“Neither.”
Some apologies explain.

They do not restore.
