Chapter 21 - Margaret Chooses

My mother was offered a simple choice.

Protect Richard.

Or testify.

For five years she had chosen silence.

This time she chose differently.

Margaret admitted that Richard called her from the hospital hours after the crash.

“He said Emma survived.”

My attorney asked:

“Did you tell Damon?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Richard said Emma had discovered financial irregularities that could destroy the family companies.”

“And you believed financial stability justified telling your son his wife was dead?”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“No.”

“Then why did you do it?”

Her answer was quiet.

“Because I was a coward.”

No excuse.

No elaborate defense.

For once, a member of my family simply named what they had done.
