Chapter 28 - Five Birthdays

I asked Lily what she wanted for her sixth birthday.
“A dinosaur.”
“A real dinosaur?”
“Yes.”
“That may be difficult.”
“A little real dinosaur.”
“We’ll negotiate.”
She frowned.
“I also want pancakes.”
“That I can do.”
Then she asked:
“Were you at my other birthdays?”
I felt my chest tighten.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I didn’t know where you were.”
She thought for several seconds.
“But now you know.”
“Yes.”
“So you can come to this one.”
Children can reduce unbearable grief to simple arithmetic.
Five missed birthdays.
One coming next.
I couldn’t change the first five.
May you like
I could show up for the sixth.
