Chapter 23 - Emma Comes Home

Three weeks after the engagement dinner, Emma agreed to visit Whitmore House.

She stopped outside the front doors.

“This feels strange.”

“It’s strange for me too.”

Lily held both our hands.

Inside, Emma walked through rooms preserved differently from her memories.

The piano had moved.

Walls had been repainted.

Her photographs had been stored away after my engagement to Victoria.

I felt ashamed.

Emma touched the empty spot where our wedding photograph once hung.

“You had to live.”

“I thought you were gone.”

“I know.”

Lily ran toward the staircase.

“Is this Daddy’s castle?”

Emma laughed for the first time.

“No castles.”

“It has too many rooms.”

I agreed.

“Definitely too many rooms.”

Something softened.

Not healed.

May you like

But softened.
