Chapter 3 - The Cottage

The cottage was eleven miles from my estate.

I had driven past the road hundreds of times.

Never knew it existed.

Nora unlocked the door.

“Emma?”

No answer.

We entered.

A lamp burned beside the sofa.

A child’s coloring books covered a small table.

Then I saw a woman standing at the end of the hallway.

I stopped breathing.

She was thinner.

Her hair was shorter.

A pale line marked one side of her forehead.

But it was Emma.

Alive.

She stared at me.

For five years I had imagined this moment in impossible dreams.

I thought I would run to her.

Instead neither of us moved.

Finally she whispered:

“Damon?”

I couldn’t speak.

Her eyes filled.

“You came.”

I managed:

“You’re alive.”

Emma covered her mouth.

“I tried to reach you.”

My knees weakened.

Behind me, Lily ran forward.

“Mommy!”

Emma crouched and hugged her.

Then she looked at me again.

Lily pointed.

“I found Daddy.”

Emma closed her eyes and started crying.

I sat down because standing had become impossible.

“Five years.”

“I know.”

“I buried you.”

“I know.”

“How?”

Emma looked toward Nora.

Then back at me.

“They told me you knew.”

The words hit harder than anything that evening.

“Knew what?”

May you like

“That I survived.”
