Chapter 5 - The Pregnancy

“Were you already pregnant?”
Emma nodded.
“Eight weeks.”
I looked toward Lily.
Five years old.
My daughter.
My daughter had existed while I stood at Emma’s funeral believing our future had been buried with her.
“Did you know before the accident?”
Emma nodded.
“Two days.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“You were in London.”
I remembered.
The argument.
Emma wanted me to come home early.
I told her I would return after negotiations.
She said there was something important she needed to tell me.
I said:
“It can wait forty-eight hours.”
For five years those words had haunted me.
Now I knew what she had been trying to say.
“You wanted to tell me about Lily.”
“Yes.”
I turned away because I couldn’t let my daughter see me fall apart.
Emma continued.
“When Victoria discovered the pregnancy, she told me it complicated everything.”
“What does that mean?”
“She never explained.”
Nora answered instead.
“It meant Lily was an heir.”
I turned.
“To what?”
Nora looked at Emma.
Emma whispered:
May you like
“Not just your money.”
