Chapter 9 - Tasha’s Empire

Tasha had her own truth to face.

Her power in Yard C depended on scarcity.

Coffee.

Soap.

Extra food.

Favors.

She did not create prison poverty.

She exploited it.

When commissary prices rose, desperate women borrowed from her.

Then repaid double.

Sometimes with laundry.

Sometimes with intimidation.

Helen told her:

“You learned the same business model.”

Tasha nearly exploded.

“Don’t compare me to Malcolm.”

“I compared the pattern.”

“You think washing somebody’s clothes is the same as stealing hundreds of thousands?”

“No.”

Helen looked at her.

“But telling yourself someone’s desperation gives you permission is where it starts.”

Tasha walked away.

For three days, she refused to speak to Helen.

On the fourth, she canceled half the debts women owed her.

Not all.

She wasn’t transformed overnight.

But the empire cracked.
