Habit.
She hated it suddenly.
Renee handed her two coffee packets.
Tasha stared.
“What’s this?”
“Tuesday.”
Every Tuesday, Renee paid.
Tasha had almost forgotten.
“Keep it.”
Renee blinked.
“What?”
“Keep your coffee.”
“What’s wrong with you?”
Tasha looked toward the washbasins.
Helen was back on laundry duty under supervision.
Her silver hair tied carefully now.
Tasha walked over.
Every woman watched.
Helen stiffened.
Tasha stopped six feet away.
“I’m not touching you.”
Helen nodded.
Tasha looked at the basin.
Then at the laundry pile.
“Those yours?”
“Assigned.”
Tasha picked up half.
Helen stared.
“What are you doing?”
“Don’t make it sentimental.”
She carried the clothes to the second basin.
The yard went silent again.
