Chapter 16 - Helen’s Own Sentence

Helen became eligible to seek a sentencing reduction because of her cooperation.
Her lawyer mentioned it.
Helen hesitated.
Tasha laughed.
“Take it.”
Helen looked surprised.
“You think I should?”
“I think staying longer doesn’t fix my mom.”
Helen absorbed that.
Tasha continued.
“But don’t turn cooperation into sainthood.”
Helen smiled sadly.
“I won’t.”
She filed the motion.
Not asking to erase her guilt.
Asking the court to consider substantial assistance and age.
The prosecutor supported a modest reduction.
Accountability and mercy could coexist.
