Chapter 4 - Malcolm Ward

Malcolm Ward was forty-four.

CEO of Ward Community Services.

Handsome.

Polished.

The kind of man who spoke about compassion while watching quarterly margins.

After Victor died, Malcolm inherited the family’s remaining companies.

Helen sat on several boards.

Mostly ceremonial.

She signed documents.

Trusted her son.

Exactly as she once trusted Victor.

Then investigators found inflated invoices in a state-funded housing program.

Six hundred forty thousand dollars.

Helen’s signature appeared on certifications.

Malcolm told her:

“Mom, this is administrative.”

Federal and state investigators disagreed.

He asked Helen to accept responsibility for signing inaccurate documents.

“You were chair.”

“You prepared them.”

“Staff prepared them.”

“Under you.”

Then the old family sentence returned.

Protect the family.

Helen pleaded guilty to offenses she had actually committed—signing false certifications and obstructing part of the audit—while refusing to accuse Malcolm without proof.

After sentencing, prosecutors charged one lower-level accountant.

Not Malcolm.

Then Helen received a discovery packet from her former attorney.

Email chains.

Malcolm had told staff:

My mother approved everything.

He had built his defense before asking her to sacrifice herself.

That was when Helen stopped protecting him.

Too late for Denise.

Maybe not too late for everyone else.
