Chapter 29 - Tasha Comes Home

Months later, Tasha received parole.
Conditions were strict.
Employment.
Counseling.
No contact with certain former associates.
Regular reporting.
She accepted everything.
Helen did not meet her at the gate.
That was intentional.
Tasha’s sister Renee—different from her former cellmate—picked her up.
They ate breakfast.
Tasha stared at a washing machine in the apartment laundry room.
Her sister laughed.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
Tasha touched the lid.
For years laundry meant hierarchy.
Debts.
Helen.
Dirty water.
Now it was just laundry.
Later that week, Tasha called Helen.
“Coffee?”
Helen hesitated.
“Yes.”
They met in a public café.
No prison uniforms.
No officers.
No one watching.
For the first ten minutes, neither knew how to speak.
Then Tasha said,
“You look shorter outside.”
Helen laughed so hard she cried.
That was their beginning.
Not forgiveness.
May you like
Something more careful.
