Chapter 14 - Tasha’s Mother’s Letters

The innocence clinic recovered Denise’s archived prison letters.

Many were addressed to Tasha.

Most had been returned when Tasha moved foster homes.

She never received them.

One said:

You may hear people say I chose money over you. I didn’t. I made mistakes in life, but this theft was not one of them.

Tasha stopped reading.

For years she believed Denise had abandoned her through crime.

Now she learned the abandonment had been partly manufactured by a false conviction.

She returned to the yard furious.

Helen saw.

“I’m sorry.”

Tasha snapped,

“Stop saying that.”

Helen fell silent.

Tasha continued.

“Sorry is for accidents.”

Helen nodded.

“You’re right.”

“What do you say instead?”

Helen looked at her.

“I did something wrong, and I cannot undo what it cost you.”

Tasha’s anger softened by one degree.

That was enough.
