Chapter 26 - Tasha’s Parole Review

Tasha became eligible for parole consideration.

Her institutional history hurt her.

Years of intimidation.

Disciplinary tickets.

The assault on Helen.

But the last year looked different.

No extortion reports.

Completed counseling.

Work supervisor recommendations.

Restorative programming.

At the hearing, the board asked about Helen.

“Did she provoke you?”

“No.”

“Why did you assault her?”

“Because she told me no.”

Tasha paused.

“And I thought fear was respect.”

That answer mattered.

She did not use her mother’s wrongful conviction as an excuse.

When asked whether learning the truth changed her, she said:

“It explained some anger. It did not make my choices disappear.”

The board took the matter under advisement.

No miracle decision on the spot.
