Chapter 6 - Tasha Learns About Crestline

Tasha received the information through her public defender, not prison gossip.
Helen insisted on proper channels.
Her attorney contacted a nonprofit innocence clinic reviewing Denise Carter’s case.
The clinic contacted Tasha.
Attorney Maya Brooks met her in visitation.
“Your mother’s conviction may have been based on materially false evidence.”
Tasha stared through the glass divider.
“May?”
“We verify before we promise.”
Tasha respected that.
Maya showed her Denise’s 2003 warning memo.
Tasha recognized the signature.
Her mother’s handwriting.
She began crying before reaching the second page.
Denise had written:
I am concerned someone is using my credentials to disguise payments.
Dated before the theft was “discovered.”
That mattered.
A person planning to steal rarely documented the scheme as suspicious beforehand.
Then Maya explained Crestline.
Tasha looked toward the prison laundry building.
“Crestline?”
“Yes.”
“They supply this place.”
“We know.”
Tasha laughed without humor.
“My mother went to prison because of that company, and now that company makes money from prisons?”
Maya said,
“Possibly. We need records.”
Tasha’s hands shook.

For the first time, revenge felt too small.
