Chapter 12 - Malcolm Visits

Malcolm requested to visit his mother.

Helen almost refused.

Then accepted.

He sat behind visitation glass.

“Mom.”

“Malcolm.”

“You’re talking to investigators.”

“Yes.”

His jaw tightened.

“About Dad?”

“Yes.”

“Why dig up twenty-year-old history?”

“Because Denise Carter was innocent.”

Malcolm looked away.

“You don’t know that.”

“I do.”

“You testified otherwise.”

“I lied by omission.”

He leaned closer.

“You want to destroy Dad’s name?”

“He destroyed it himself.”

“And mine?”

Helen stared.

“That depends on what you did.”

Malcolm’s expression changed.

Then:

“You think that Carter woman cares about truth? She assaulted you.”

Helen’s voice remained quiet.

“She did.”

“And you trust her?”

“No.”

Malcolm smiled.

Helen continued.

“I trust documents.”

May you like

The smile disappeared.
