Chapter 27 - Helen Leaves Hawthorne

Helen’s release day arrived on a cold morning.

Naomi waited outside.

Helen packed two books.

Letters.

No souvenirs.

Tasha stood at the unit door.

“You leaving without washing my clothes?”

Helen smiled.

“Terrible service.”

Tasha looked down.

Then:

“I hated you.”

“I know.”

“Part of me still does.”

Helen nodded.

“You’re allowed.”

Tasha’s eyes filled.

“And part of me doesn’t.”

Helen swallowed.

“That’s more than I earned.”

Tasha shook her head.

“Stop deciding what I’m allowed to give you.”

Helen smiled.

“Fair.”

They did not hug.

Not every meaningful relationship needed one.

Helen left.

The gate closed behind her.

Tasha returned to the yard.

For the first time, Helen was outside and Tasha remained inside.
