Chapter 29 - Daniel Pays

One evening Daniel came to my house carrying an envelope.
I immediately said,
“No.”
He laughed.
“You don’t know what this is.”
“If it’s another birthday invitation, electronic works.”
He placed it on the table.
Inside was a check.
$4,250.
I stared.
“One mortgage payment.”
“Daniel.”
“I know I don’t legally owe you three years of payments.”
“No.”
“And I can’t repay everything.”
“I don’t want—”
He raised a hand.
“For once, stop helping.”
I stopped.
“I saved this over six months.”
“Why?”
“Because I wanted to know I could give back one payment.”
My eyes filled.
“I’m not asking you to cash it.”
“Then what?”
“Do whatever you want.”
I looked at the amount.
Exactly the payment I canceled after Liam’s birthday.
$4,250.
The number that once represented dependence.
Now it represented choice.
I deposited it.
Then donated $4,250 to the local housing-stability fund in Robert’s name.
I told Daniel.
He laughed.
“Of course you did.”
“You said whatever I wanted.”
“I did.”
No resentment.
The circle had almost closed.

One thing remained.
Liam’s birthday.
