Chapter 20 - A Smaller Christmas

Christmas happened in Daniel and Emily’s rental townhouse.

Not mine.

They hosted.

Three bedrooms.

Narrow dining room.

No formal sitting area.

The table barely fit seven people after Emily’s parents arrived.

I loved it.

Liam hung paper snowflakes.

Daniel cooked.

Badly.

Emily laughed more than I had heard in years.

No caterer.

No expensive centerpieces.

No financial performance.

After dinner, Liam handed me a small box.

Inside was a painted wooden ornament.

GRANDMA’S HOUSE — SAFE PLACE.

My eyes filled.

“Did you make this?”

“Yes.”

“Why safe?”

He shrugged.

“You say no there.”

Everyone laughed.

I did too.

Because he meant it affectionately now.

Boundaries had become safety.

May you like

Not rejection.

That was when I knew the birthday dinner no longer owned the family.
