Chapter 14 - The Bank’s Decision

Pioneer completed its internal review.

Daniel admitted submitting the false support letter.

The lender did not immediately foreclose.

The loan was current except for the canceled monthly support payment, which Daniel and Emily covered using savings before the grace period ended.

Important.

They had managed.

Painfully.

But managed.

Because the house was already under contract, Pioneer agreed to proceed toward payoff at closing while reserving rights regarding the false document.

The bank referred the matter to its compliance department and appropriate authorities as required.

No one could promise whether charges would follow.

Daniel’s attorney handled it.

I did not.

That was perhaps the hardest boundary.

I knew lawyers.

I knew people.

Robert’s old business contacts could have made calls.

I made none.

When Daniel asked:

“Do you know anyone who can help?”

I answered,

“You already have Michael.”

His face fell.

Then he nodded.

“Right.”

He was learning that having a mother with resources was not the same as having access to all of them.
