Chapter 15 - Robert’s Funeral Memory

Selling the house stirred Robert’s memory for me.
After his funeral, Daniel had stood in my kitchen exactly as I now stood after Liam’s birthday.
He said:
“Mom, you don’t have to worry about anything. I’ll take care of you.”
I believed him.
He probably meant it.
Then life reversed the promise.
Within three years, I was taking care of him.
No one noticed when temporary became permanent.
That was the danger of family roles.
They changed quietly.
One evening I took Robert’s letter outside and read it again.
He will love you if you say no.
I finally believed him.
Not because Daniel liked the word no.
Because he kept coming back.
Not for money now.
Sometimes for advice.
Sometimes dinner.
Sometimes nothing.
He was angry with me.
And he loved me.

Both existed.
That was healthier than gratitude purchased by monthly transfers.
