Chapter 13 - Emily’s Secret Account

Emily asked to meet me at a café.
She looked nervous.
“I have to tell you something before Daniel does.”
I waited.
“For eighteen months, I’ve had a separate savings account.”
I frowned.
“How much?”
“Twenty-seven thousand.”
Surprise.
“Daniel doesn’t know?”
“He knows now.”
“Where did it come from?”
“My freelance marketing work.”
“Why hide it?”
She looked ashamed.
“Because every time money appeared, Daniel found a use.”
That sentence sounded familiar.
“Why didn’t you use it for the mortgage?”
“I am.”
She explained.
The account would cover deposits, moving costs, and several months of the rental.
Good.
Responsible.
But secrecy inside marriage was still secrecy.
“I told Daniel yesterday.”
“How did he react?”
“Angry.”
“Fair.”
“Yes.”
“Did you tell him why?”
“Yes.”
Emily looked at me.
“He said I treated him like someone I couldn’t trust.”
I raised an eyebrow.
She almost smiled.
“Exactly.”
The money itself was not betrayal.
It was evidence of how damaged their financial trust had become.
Emily had prepared an escape hatch.
Daniel had prepared false support letters.
Both had stopped believing direct conversation could protect them.
