Chapter 11 - The House Sells

The first offer arrived in eleven days.

Lower than asking.

Daniel rejected it.

Emily nearly exploded.

“This is not Northstar!”

They argued in the kitchen.

Liam heard.

The next day, Emily called me.

Then stopped herself.

“Sorry.”

“For what?”

“I was going to ask you to talk sense into him.”

I smiled.

“Good catch.”

She laughed bitterly.

“This is hard.”

“Yes.”

“I didn’t realize how often we used you as referee.”

“I did.”

Then corrected myself.

“No. I am realizing.”

The second offer was stronger.

$812,000.

Cash buyer.

Short inspection period.

Daniel still wanted more.

His realtor showed him comparable sales.

Interest carrying costs.

Mortgage.

Taxes.

Every month they waited cost money they no longer had.

For once, math defeated pride.

Daniel accepted.

The closing was scheduled for five weeks later.

I did not attend.

It was their house.

Their sale.

Their problem.

Their accomplishment.

That distinction became important.

When the contract became final, Daniel texted:

Accepted.

I replied:

Good.

Nothing more.

He called.

“You’re not going to say you told me so?”

“No.”

“Dad would.”

I smiled.

“Probably.”

A pause.

Then Daniel laughed.

Small.

May you like

Genuine.

Maybe adulthood had room for humor too.
