Chapter 22 - Emily Apologizes Without Excuse

Emily invited me for lunch.
No crisis.
No request.
That itself felt suspicious.
She laughed.
“I know your face.”
“What face?”
“The one that thinks I’m about to ask for money.”
“Occupational scar.”
Then she became serious.
“I never properly apologized for the birthday.”
“You did.”
“I said sorry.”
“Yes.”
“I didn’t say why I was wrong.”
I waited.
“I was angry at you because I felt powerless in my marriage.”
She looked at me.
“So I enjoyed seeing somebody else make you powerless for a minute.”
The honesty stunned me.
“That’s ugly.”
“Yes.”
“But true.”
“Yes.”
She continued.
“I should have protected Liam from thinking cruelty was funny.”
I nodded.
“And protected you.”
“Yes.”
No tears required.
No justification.
Just accountability.
I accepted the apology.
