Chapter 18 - The Trust

I told Daniel about the estate changes myself.

No surprise after my death.

No punishment from beyond the grave.

We sat at my kitchen table.

I explained.

His inheritance would go into a discretionary trust.

Independent trustee.

Protection from creditors.

No direct access to principal for speculative business ventures without review.

Liam’s education trust separate.

Charitable gifts increased.

Daniel’s face remained still.

“How much did you cut me?”

Interesting first question.

“I did not give you percentages.”

“Mom.”

“You will still be a substantial beneficiary.”

“But less.”

“Yes.”

He looked hurt.

“Because of the slap?”

“No.”

“Because of the mortgage?”

“Because our family has spent decades treating inheritance as if it already belongs to you.”

He looked away.

“Dad wanted—”

I stopped him.

“Do not use your father as a blank check.”

He flinched.

I softened.

“Robert wanted you secure.”

“Not entitled.”

Daniel nodded.

“I know.”

Then something surprising.

“Can Liam’s trust pay for private school?”

“Yes.”

His face brightened.

“Then maybe—”

“Not automatically.”

He stopped.

“Why?”

“Because the trust is for education, not maintaining appearances.”

“That’s subjective.”

“Yes.”

“Who decides?”

“A professional trustee based on guidelines.”

He looked frustrated.

Then laughed.

“You really thought of everything.”

“No.”

I smiled.

“I finally stopped pretending I should decide everything.”

That was the truth.

The trust protected me from rescuing too.

Structure was not only for Daniel.

It was for my weakness.
