Chapter 9 - SILAS MEETS ISAIAH

Isaiah agreed to meet Silas.

Not at Bellmont.

At a diner.

Silas arrived in a black sedan.

Isaiah arrived in an old pickup.

They stared.

Forty-nine years.

Silas said:

“You got old.”

Isaiah answered:

“So did your ego.”

Naomi laughed.

The tension broke.

Then Silas cried.

Quietly.

“I thought you were dead.”

“I wasn't.”

“I looked.”

“I know.”

Silas stared.

“You knew?”

“Arthur told me.”

That hurt.

Isaiah continued:

“I didn't want to be found then.”

“Later?”

“I was ashamed.”

“For what?”

“Taking the settlement.”

Silas leaned forward.

“You saved your wife.”

“I stayed silent.”

“Both.”

Isaiah stared.

Silas had learned complexity too.

They talked for three hours.

No magical restoration.

Too much time.

But when leaving Silas asked:

“Can I call you?”

Isaiah said:

“Once.”

Silas smiled.

“Negotiator.”

May you like

“Still.”
