Chapter 4 - THE WAREHOUSE FIRE

Arthur did not admit starting the fire.
He admitted something else.
Warehouse 14 stored materials Bell Meridian was not authorized to keep there.
Arthur had arranged it.
Why?
Money.
A contractor paid him to use unused storage space off-books.
No dramatic criminal empire.
Ordinary corruption.
Then a faulty electrical unit near the unauthorized storage area sparked.
The fire spread faster because safety lanes had been blocked.
Isaiah discovered the arrangement days before.
He threatened to report it.
Arthur begged.
Bell Meridian was already under financial pressure.
A scandal could destroy the company.
Silas asked:
“And after the fire?”
Arthur looked down.
“Isaiah had proof.”
“Of your arrangement?”
“Yes.”
“You paid him?”
“I offered.”
Naomi's jaw tightened.
“Did he take it?”
Arthur looked at her.
“No.”
Of course.
“What happened?”
Arthur threatened to blame Isaiah.
As maintenance supervisor, Isaiah had signed routine safety sheets.
Arthur could make it appear Isaiah ignored hazards.
Would it have worked?
Maybe not.
But Isaiah had a wife and infant son.
David.
Naomi's father.
Arthur told him:
“If you fight us, lawyers will bury you.”
Silas closed his eyes.
“My family.”
Arthur whispered:
“Our father knew.”
Silas looked up.
Their father, Henry Bell.
Dead thirty-eight years.
Henry learned after fire.
Instead of exposing Arthur, he chose company.
He arranged a settlement with Isaiah.
Not money.
A confidentiality agreement combined with a promise:
No charges.
Clean employment record.
Relocation assistance.
Isaiah left Savannah.
Silas never knew.
“Why tell me he disappeared?”
Arthur answered:
“Father said you'd destroy family to defend him.”
Silas stared.
“Maybe I would have defended the truth.”
Arthur laughed sadly.
“That's what he feared.”
Naomi stood.
“I’m leaving.”
Silas turned.
“Naomi—”
“My grandfather gets to tell me the rest.”
Correct.
It was Isaiah's story.
Not theirs.
Silas nodded.
Before she left he asked:
“Will you tell him I want to see him?”
Naomi looked at the old tycoon.
“No.”
Silas's face fell.
“I'll tell him you asked.”
Difference.
Then she walked away.
No limousine.
No offer accepted.
She took the employee entrance to the parking garage.
The next morning, she drove to her grandfather's small brick house.
Isaiah Carter sat on the porch.
He took one look at her face.
“What happened?”
Naomi sat beside him.
“Do you know Silas Bell?”
Isaiah went completely still.
Then sighed.
May you like
“I wondered how long it would take the past to get bored.”
