Chapter 8 - Rachel’s Marriage

Rachel confronted Thomas at home.

Lily was staying with grandparents.

“You knew about temperature waivers?”

Thomas said:

“I knew Denise handled exceptions.”

“You were copied.”

“I receive thousands of emails.”

“You used my account to shut Sarah down.”

“To prevent panic.”

“Why?”

“Because every rejected load costs district money.”

Rachel stared.

“So?”

“We were facing budget deficit.”

“Children are not budget line.”

“Everything is budget line, Rachel.”

That sentence ended something.

Not marriage immediately.

But illusion.

Thomas explained Harvest Ridge offered credits if district accepted certain short-term deviations.

“Temporary temperature excursions.”

He believed food still safe.

Did he know rejected stock was relabeled?

He said no.

Did he receive money from Owen?

“No.”

Rachel asked:

“Did Denise?”

“I don't know.”

For once perhaps true.

Then Rachel asked:

“Why did you access my email seventeen times?”

Thomas looked away.

“Because principals listen to other principals.”

“You borrowed my authority.”

“I used our position.”

“Our?”

Rachel said:

“My job is not your tool.”

She moved into guest room that night.
