Chapter 13 - The Board Meeting

Parents filled district auditorium.

Vanessa sat three rows behind me.

Not beside.

She respected distance.

Rachel spoke first.

“I failed to ensure concerns reached me directly.”

Some parents shouted.

She continued.

“My husband’s access to my email contributed to that failure. I did not know he was using my account, but I should have secured it and followed up when staff concerns disappeared.”

No excuse.

Thomas sat with lawyer.

He did not speak.

Then I was invited.

I hated microphones.

“My name is Sarah Keene.”

Everyone knew by now.

“I am not a food scientist.”

Pause.

“I am cafeteria worker.”

Parents listened.

“My job includes checking temperatures, dates, packaging and condition before food reaches children.”

I looked toward Vanessa.

“We don't need special authority to stop a line when something looks wrong.”

Then toward board.

“We need permission not to be punished for doing it.”

That became headline.

I hated headlines.

May you like

But liked sentence.
