Chapter 28 - Lily’s Question

A year after Field Day, Lily found me arranging fruit.

She was nine now.

“Mrs. Keene?”

“Yes?”

“Do you remember sandwich?”

“Yes.”

She looked serious.

“Why did everybody believe my dad’s people instead of you?”

Hard question.

“Some didn't know enough.”

“Mom didn't.”

“No.”

“Why didn't she know?”

“Because systems can hide information.”

Lily frowned.

“That sounds like grown-up excuse.”

I smiled.

“Sometimes it is.”

Then:

“People also trust people they love.”

“Is that bad?”

“No.”

“But?”

“Trust works better when questions are allowed.”

She nodded as if storing it.

Then stole a grape.

“I saw that.”

She ran.

Normal.
