Chapter 29 - The Next Field Day

The next Field Day arrived under clear sky.
Parents returned.
Vanessa volunteered at hydration station.
No designer sunglasses this time.
Maybe coincidence.
Mason ran relay.
Lily carried score sheets.
Rachel stood near gym.
I supervised lunch.
Fresh sandwiches arrived at 9:14.
Driver opened truck.
Temperature:
36°F.
We checked random cartons.
Labels matched.
Packages intact.
Still, one employee asked:
“Do we really have to check every lot?”
I looked at her.
“Yes.”
She nodded.
No argument.
No fear.
The system had changed enough that stopping was ordinary.
Then a new parent approached.
“Why is lunch late?”
“Final check.”
“My son’s hungry.”
“It’ll be two minutes.”
She sighed.
“Fine.”
That was all.
I almost laughed.
Two years earlier impatience became slap.
Now inconvenience remained inconvenience.
May you like
Progress can be boring too.
