Chapter 7 - CLAIRE’S FATHER
Claire arrived at Daniel’s apartment before dawn.
She had seen the Nightfall document.
“My father says he doesn't know what that code means.”
“Do you believe him?”
“I don't know.”
Good answer.
George Bennett was senior partner at Bennett, Hale & Cross.
Whitmore outside counsel for twenty-seven years.
Daniel had known him since childhood.
George gave speeches about ethics.
Raised Claire after her mother died.
Was supposed to walk her down aisle yesterday.
Now his initials appeared beside payments supporting a concealed room.
Claire said:
“I told investigators they can have my firm records.”
“Can you authorize?”
“Not everything. Partners can cooperate.”
“What did your father say?”
“That I’m destroying firm over one misunderstood document.”
Daniel laughed.
Same language.
Destroying.
As though exposing wrong creates wrong.
Claire sat beside him.
“Daniel, if he knew…”
She couldn't finish.
Daniel understood.
She was having same experience.
Family becoming evidence.
“Don't protect me from it,” he said.
“What?”
“If you find something connected to my family, tell investigators first.”
She nodded.
“You do same.”
“Deal.”
Wedding relationship had changed.
Not ended yet.
But vows no longer relevant.
Truth first.
Forensic review of Bennett Legal records found annual legal invoice:
Estate risk containment — Nightfall.
Signed George Bennett.
What did services involve?
Confidential agreements with contractors.
Payments to private nurse.
Electronic access consultation.
George’s lawyers argued he believed Nightfall was security for an ill family member requiring privacy.
Then investigators found email from 2019.
Richard to George:
Shaw remains stable. Margaret becoming sentimental. Need reinforce that disclosure ends all of us.
George replied:
Your family problem is not legal problem. Keep my name out.
Richard:
Your signatures are already in.
George:
Then maintain current arrangement until succession.
Until succession.
Emily was right.
They planned keep her hidden until Daniel inherited.
Then what?
Destroy evidence?
Move Emily?
Force Daniel into cover-up after he became fiduciary?
Detective Torres theorized carefully.
Maybe Richard intended disclose Emily privately once Daniel became chairman, then tell him exposure would collapse company under his watch.
Trap the clean heir after inheritance.
Daniel felt furious admiration at cruelty of design.
Richard created complicity by sequence.
Give Daniel control.
Then reveal impossible secret.
Make him choose company or truth.
Except wall cracked early.
Daniel had not inherited.
He remained free to act.
George Bennett was questioned.
Claire stopped speaking to father except through counsel.
The wedding remained canceled indefinitely.
One evening Daniel said:
“You don't have to stay.”
Claire replied:
“Neither do you.”
They both stayed.
Not as bride and groom.
