Chapter 5 - THE BRAND-NEW LOCK

Police traced the electronic lock purchase.
Buyer:
Whitmore Estate Services.
Authorized by:
Adrian Whitmore.
No ambiguity.
Daniel confronted his brother only with attorneys present.
“Why?”
Adrian looked exhausted.
“Because old lock failed.”
Daniel stared.
“You replaced the lock on a room containing a woman.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you open the door and call police?”
Adrian rubbed his face.
“You think I haven't asked myself that?”
“No. I think you answered yourself for three years.”
Adrian flinched.
He explained.
Three years earlier he followed unusual estate maintenance invoices.
Found hidden basement corridor.
Found Emily.
She told him everything.
He wanted release her.
Then Richard showed him documents.
Adrian had approved questionable payments years earlier during opioid addiction? Health sensitive? Avoid unnecessary. Could be during financial misconduct. Better: Adrian approved vendor acquisitions involving kickbacks unknowingly? He had accepted payments? Let's keep.
Richard showed evidence Adrian had signed off on several fraudulent transfers while CFO.
“If scandal broke, Dad said I'd go down too.”
“You signed.”
“I thought they were legitimate acquisitions.”
“Then investigate.”
“I was scared.”
“So Emily paid for your fear.”
Adrian looked down.
“Yes.”
At least he didn't deny.
He told himself he was protecting employees.
Stockholders.
Mother.
Family foundation.
He began secretly gathering evidence against Richard.
Three years of gathering.
No action.
Daniel said:
“You could have called federal investigators the first night.”
“I know.”
“Then why new lock?”
Adrian's voice dropped.
“Dad wanted replace it with biometric access.”
Daniel stared.
“I installed one I controlled too.”
“So you could enter?”
“Yes.”
“To help Emily?”
“I brought books. News. Medicine.”
Emily had said someone maintained room.
Adrian.
That did not make him rescuer.
It made him participant who had made captivity less unbearable while preserving captivity.
Daniel said exactly that.
Adrian cried.
Daniel did not comfort him.
“What happened yesterday?”
“The explosion?”
“Yes.”
Adrian looked confused.
“I don't know.”
Police investigation found cause later.
Wedding renovation crew had been installing a wine-storage cooling system.
A contractor drilled into a sealed service chase beside hidden wall.
Pressure and vibration weakened old masonry.
No bomb.
No sabotage.
Chance.
A wall built to hide truth failed because someone renovated a wine cellar for wedding.
The irony was obscene.
Adrian said:
“If that wall hadn't opened…”
Daniel finished:
“You would have kept waiting.”
Adrian didn't answer.
May you like
That was answer.
