Chapter 3 - EMILY SHAW

Emily woke the next morning asking whether Daniel was real.

He was allowed into her hospital room only after she requested him.

He stopped several feet from the bed.

“You asked for me?”

Emily studied him.

“You look like your grandfather.”

“I've heard that.”

“You were twenty-four.”

“When you disappeared.”

She nodded.

“You believed them.”

Daniel didn't lie.

“Yes.”

Emily looked toward window.

“Everybody did.”

“I’m sorry.”

“That doesn't help yet.”

Fair.

Daniel sat.

“What did you mean when you said they were waiting for me to inherit?”

Emily's hands tightened around blanket.

“In 2016 your father was preparing succession.”

“I wasn't supposed to become CEO then.”

“No. Adrian was.”

Daniel frowned.

Adrian was older.

More involved.

But Richard had changed succession planning six years ago, naming Daniel eventual executive chairman instead.

Why?

Emily continued.

“I found two sets of financial records.”

“Company fraud?”

“More than company.”

She described shell entities.

Consulting payments.

Acquisition companies.

Money leaving Whitmore Industries before being routed back to family-owned accounts.

“How much?”

“In 2016?”

“Yes.”

“Forty-seven million.”

Daniel stared.

“And now?”

“I don't know.”

Emily looked at him.

“But they had ten years.”

She had copied records onto two drives.

One she hid.

One Richard found.

He confronted her at Whitmore House after she came to retrieve documents.

Daniel asked quietly:

“Who locked you downstairs?”

Emily closed her eyes.

“Your father ordered it.”

“Who helped?”

She took a breath.

“His security chief at the time.”

“Martin Vale?”

“Yes.”

Martin died four years earlier.

“What about my mother?”

Emily looked at him.

“She found out later.”

“How much later?”

“Two years.”

Daniel's heart sank.

“And she didn't free you?”

“No.”

“Adrian?”

“Three years ago.”

Daniel stood and walked to window.

Three years.

His brother had known for three years.

Emily said:

“Adrian told me if I came out, thousands of employees could lose jobs.”

Daniel turned.

“What?”

“He said exposing Richard would destroy Whitmore.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“So his solution was leave you there?”

Emily looked away.

“He said he was trying to find another way.”

Three years.

No other way had arrived.

Daniel asked:

“Why didn't they kill you?”

The question sounded awful aloud.

Emily answered without details.

“Your father needed information.”

“What information?”

“The second copy.”

Daniel remembered brass key.

“You kept evidence somewhere.”

Emily looked at him.

“Yes.”

“Does that key open it?”

For first time, fear returned to her face.

“Don't tell your family.”

“I won't.”

“Not Claire either.”

Daniel paused.

“Why Claire?”

Emily whispered:

“Because Bennett Legal helped your father create the first shell companies.”

Claire Bennett.

His bride.

Her family law firm.

Daniel felt the floor shift again.

Emily watched his face.

“You really didn't know.”

“No.”

“Then maybe they chose you because of that.”

“Who?”

Emily answered:

May you like

“Everyone who needed a clean heir.”
