Chapter 6 - MARGARET’S TWO YEARS

Margaret Whitmore came to Daniel’s apartment voluntarily.

No lawyers.

He almost refused meeting.

Then let her in.

She sat across from him.

“When did you know?”

“2018.”

Emily disappeared 2016.

Two years.

“How?”

“I heard your father arguing with Martin Vale.”

Margaret followed.

Found basement.

Saw Emily through locked door.

“What did you do?”

“I confronted Richard.”

“And?”

“He told me Emily was dangerous.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You believed that?”

“No.”

“Then?”

“He said if I exposed him, company collapsed.”

Same story.

Jobs.

Foundations.

Family.

Then personal leverage.

Richard threatened to reveal that Margaret had signed tax documents tied to hidden trusts.

“Were you involved?”

“I signed papers I did not read carefully.”

Everyone signed papers.

Everyone trusted Richard.

Or used trust as excuse.

Daniel asked:

“Why not free Emily anonymously?”

Margaret cried.

“I was afraid Richard would know.”

“He did know you knew.”

“Yes.”

“Then what exactly were you protecting?”

She had no answer.

Eventually:

“My life.”

Truth.

Margaret had status.

Homes.

Charity boards.

Marriage.

Reputation.

Leaving Richard meant admitting decades built partly on corruption.

So she visited Emily secretly.

Promised she was working on release.

Then months became years.

Margaret said:

“I tried to convince Richard.”

Daniel stood.

“She did not need you to convince him.”

His mother looked up.

“She needed you to open a door.”

Silence.

Daniel understood something.

His family had transformed simple moral decisions into strategic puzzles because strategy allowed delay.

Should we expose?

When?

How?

What about market?

Employees?

Tax?

Reputation?

Meanwhile a living woman remained locked downstairs.

Complexity protected cowardice.

Margaret whispered:

“I’m sorry.”

Daniel replied:

“Tell Emily.”

“I will.”

“If she wants to hear it.”

Margaret nodded.

Before leaving, she gave Daniel envelope.

“I took this from your father’s study four years ago.”

Inside:

Bank transfer schedule.

Dozens of entities.

One line highlighted.

PROJECT NIGHTFALL — SHAW RETENTION

Daniel stared.

“What is retention?”

Margaret said:

“Money spent keeping Emily hidden.”

Annual payments.

Security.

Maintenance.

Medical contractors.

Confidentiality agreements.

Daniel felt ill.

“This was budgeted.”

“Yes.”

Not one impulsive crime ten years ago.

An operating expense.

Board-level accounting disguised under property security.

Who approved?

Richard.

Martin Vale.

Later Adrian indirectly.

And one other name.

G. Bennett.

Claire's father.

May you like

George Bennett.
