Chapter 8 - Evelyn Hears the Recording

Evelyn listened once.

She did not ask to replay it.

When Grant said:

Mom is going to let you destroy me over accounting?

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Daniel had known Grant would use her.

Not because she was weak.

Because she had spent decades smoothing fights between her sons.

After the recording ended, she sat motionless.

Clara waited.

Finally Evelyn said,

“Daniel was right.”

“About what?”

“I choose peace.”

Her voice broke.

“Even when peace helps the wrong person.”

The same sentence Lily remembered.

Clara sat beside her.

“That doesn’t make this your fault.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“Don’t do that.”

“What?”

“Make me feel better before I tell the truth.”

Clara stopped.

Evelyn continued.

“When they were boys, Grant cheated during a school competition.”

Clara listened.

“Daniel told me. I made Daniel keep quiet because I didn’t want Grant suspended.”

Years later, Grant crashed their father’s car after drinking.

Daniel found him.

Evelyn persuaded Samuel to handle it privately.

At Mercer Development, Grant once bypassed procurement rules.

Evelyn urged Daniel not to embarrass his brother before the board.

“Every time,” she whispered, “I called it family.”

Clara understood.

“And Grant learned…”

“That consequences could be negotiated.”

Evelyn began crying.

“I love him.”

“You can.”

“I’m furious at him.”

“You can be.”

“I want to protect him.”

Clara nodded slowly.

“That’s the dangerous part.”

Evelyn looked at her.

For a moment, tension passed between them.

Then Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.”

That afternoon, she called Grant.

He answered immediately.

“Mom.”

“Did you forge Daniel’s deed?”

Silence.

“Mom, lawyers are twisting—”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Did Peter Sloan?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did you ask him to alter Daniel’s estate documents?”

“No.”

“Did you take Daniel’s phone?”

“I collected company property.”

“Where is it?”

Pause.

“I gave it to IT.”

Company IT had no record.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Grant.”

“What?”

“Stop lying to me.”

Another silence.

Then anger.

“So Clara has you now.”

Evelyn’s face hardened.

“No.”

“Rachel Kim? Daniel’s little files?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“You.”

Grant stopped.

Evelyn continued.

“You have me.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means I am listening to you instead of explaining you.”

He laughed bitterly.

“Daniel always made me the villain.”

“No.”

Her voice shook.

“I made sure he never could.”

That silenced him.

Evelyn took a breath.

“I will not do it again.”

Then she hung up.

Across town, Grant sat inside Daniel’s former executive office.

He had begun using it two days after the funeral.

Nobody formally appointed him CEO.

The board named him interim executive chair for continuity.

He interpreted that as inheritance.

On Daniel’s desk sat the missing company phone.

Powered off.

Inside his locked drawer were the three silver backup drives from Daniel’s home.

Grant stared at them.

He had told himself he was preserving company information.

Then told himself he needed time.

Then told himself Daniel had misunderstood the payments.

Every day required a new explanation.

His assistant knocked.

“The board’s special committee is here.”

Grant looked at Daniel’s chair.

May you like

For the first time, it did not feel like a promotion.

It felt like evidence.
