Chapter 11 - Peter’s Confession

Peter Sloan was thirty-one.
He had joined his father’s law firm after law school.
Never escaped the comparison.
Andrew was meticulous.
Respected.
Old-school.
Peter wanted faster success.
Grant noticed.
The special committee interview lasted four hours.
Peter’s attorney attended.
Peter admitted creating the alternate trust document.
“Why?”
“Grant asked me to review options.”
“Before Daniel died?”
“Yes.”
That changed everything.
“When?”
“June sixteen.”
The day after Daniel signed the amendment.
“What did Grant ask?”
“To create a version preserving family control.”
“Did Daniel authorize it?”
“No.”
“Did you tell your father?”
“No.”
“Did you upload the document to the estate file?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“So if Daniel reconsidered, the draft would be ready.”
The investigator stared.
“Why place it in a folder labeled executed?”
Peter looked down.
No good answer.
Then came Daniel’s death.
Grant called Peter the same night.
“What did he say?”
“He asked whether Daniel’s amendment had been finalized.”
“What did you answer?”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“He said the family couldn’t let a secret marriage rewrite the company.”
Peter swallowed.
“He asked me to replace the scan in the firm system.”
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
“Did you destroy the original?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“My father had already sent it out.”
Rachel.
Daniel anticipated exactly this.
Peter also admitted preparing the forged deed after Daniel died.
Not physically signing Daniel’s name.
Grant provided a PDF carrying Daniel’s signature block.
Peter assembled the filing package.
“Did you know Daniel was dead?”
“Yes.”
“Then how could you believe the deed was valid?”
Peter covered his face.
“I didn’t.”
Silence.
“Who directed you?”
“Grant.”
There it was.
Peter’s testimony required corroboration.
Investigators found texts.
Grant:
Need house back under family entity before Clara lawyers up.
Peter:
Signature date issue.
Grant:
Use pre-death execution date. Filing can happen later.
Peter:
Do you have original?
Grant:
Handle it.
No original existed.
Peter handled it by creating one.
The forged deed transferred a house away from Daniel’s widow while she buried him.
Even Evelyn could no longer rationalize.
Grant was removed from all company roles pending final board action.
Law enforcement received the evidence.
No immediate dramatic arrest.
White-collar investigations took time.
Records.
Interviews.
Charging decisions.
Clara was relieved.
She did not need handcuffs to validate reality.
The house title was formally restored through court order after the fraudulent deed was invalidated.
Lily celebrated differently.
“Does that mean Uncle Grant can’t take my room?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Then she returned to drawing.

To Lily, corporate control meant whether her purple stars remained taped to the bedroom ceiling.
That reminded Clara what mattered.
