Chapter 13 - Grant Without the Office

Grant moved out of Daniel’s executive office.
The board voted unanimously.
Termination for cause.
Evelyn abstained.
Not because she opposed it.
Because she was his mother and trust chair.
She disclosed the conflict.
Governance.
Daniel would have appreciated that.
Grant packed photographs.
Awards.
A framed newspaper cover showing both brothers opening Mercer Tower.
He stared at it.
Daniel smiling.
Grant half a step behind.
Always half a step.
His resentment had not begun with money.
Money became a method of proving he mattered.
He told himself off-book vendor payments helped close difficult land deals.
Then he began taking cuts.
At first small.
Then larger.
Nolan told him everybody did it.
Daniel discovered the pattern.
Grant had a choice.
Stop.
Confess.
Or protect himself.
He chose protection repeatedly until protection became fraud.
At his apartment, Grant received a letter.
Not from lawyers.
Evelyn.
I love you.
Only four words on the first line.
Then:
I will not lie for you again.
Grant stopped reading.
Hours later, he finished.
Evelyn told him she would attend hearings if he wanted.
She would answer his calls.
She would not use trust votes, money, family relationships, or reputation to prevent consequences.
You are my son even when I do not rescue you.
Grant cried.
For the first time since Daniel’s death.
Not because he lost the company.
Because his mother finally gave him the thing he had spent a lifetime demanding.
May you like
Love without protection from consequence.
It felt terrifying.
