Chapter 29 - The Casket Photograph

Years after the funeral, Clara found a photograph.
Not from the official funeral photographer.
A distant shot taken by a relative.
Lily beside Daniel’s casket.
Her hand on his.
Wedding ring visible.
Clara almost deleted it.
Then Lily, now twelve, saw.
“That’s me?”
“Yes.”
“I look tiny.”
“You were.”
Lily stared.
“I remember his hand.”
Clara’s breath caught.
“Do you?”
“A little.”
“Want me to delete it?”
Lily thought.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I was saying goodbye.”
Clara looked at her.
“You didn’t want to let go.”
“I did eventually.”
Yes.
She had.
That was the entire story.
Not the casket.
Not the money.
Not Grant.

The letting go happened gradually.
In safe pieces.
