Chapter 5 - Lily’s Memory

Lily returned to school three days after the funeral.
Clara offered to keep her home.
Lily refused.
“Dad said staying home because you’re sad doesn’t always make you less sad.”
Clara smiled painfully.
“That sounds like him.”
Lily’s teacher, Mrs. Dalton, met them at the door.
No public announcement.
No classmates forced to express sympathy.
Lily had specifically asked for that.
At noon, Clara received a call.
Not because Lily was crying.
Because she had drawn something.
Mrs. Dalton sounded uncertain.
“It may be important.”
Clara arrived.
Lily sat with the school counselor.
Her drawing showed Daniel’s home office.
Desk.
Window.
Blue couch.
Two men.
One clearly Daniel.
The other labeled:
UNCLE GRANT.
Between them was a black rectangle.
“What is that?” Clara asked.
Lily pointed.
“Dad’s recording thing.”
Clara looked at the counselor.
The counselor remained neutral.
“Did you ask her about this?”
“Only what she wanted to tell me.”
Good.
Clara sat beside Lily.
“When did you see this?”
“The night Dad got mad.”
“What night?”
Lily shrugged.
“Before wedding.”
“How long?”
“Little.”
Clara did not press.
Lily continued voluntarily.
“I came downstairs because I wanted water.”
“What did you hear?”
“Uncle Grant said Dad couldn’t prove anything.”
Clara’s heart raced.
“And Dad?”
“He said, ‘I don’t have to. The auditors will.’”
Clara closed her eyes.
Lily kept drawing.
“Then Uncle Grant said Grandma would choose him.”
Evelyn.
“What did Dad say?”
Lily looked up.
“He said Grandma chooses peace even when peace helps the wrong person.”
Clara felt that sentence.
Daniel had known his mother too well.
“What was the black rectangle?”
“Phone.”
“Dad’s?”
Lily nodded.
“He put it on desk.”
“Was it recording?”
“I think.”
Clara did not ask more.
She called Rachel.
Daniel’s personal phone had been turned over to Clara by the hospital.
Clara had barely touched it.
Most of it was locked behind passwords she did not know.
But Daniel’s company phone had gone missing.
Mercer Development claimed they could not locate it after his death.
Rachel became very quiet.
“Which phone did Lily see?”
“Black. Bigger than his normal one.”
“Company phone.”
Clara’s stomach tightened.
“If it recorded Grant…”
“And if the phone disappeared after Daniel died…”
They had another evidence issue.
Rachel contacted company counsel.
The reply came quickly.
Grant’s assistant had signed Daniel’s company phone out of security storage the morning after his death.
Reason:
BUSINESS CONTINUITY.
Grant had access.
That did not prove destruction.
But it established custody.
Rachel requested preservation.
Company counsel demanded the device back.
Grant claimed he did not have it.
Clara stared at the email.
“Of course.”
Evelyn sat in the kitchen.
She had been visiting daily.
Not moving in.
Not taking over.
Just showing up.
Clara told her.
Evelyn’s face closed.
“He may have misplaced it.”
“Maybe.”
“You don’t believe that.”
“No.”
Evelyn looked hurt.
Clara refused to soften.
“We have a forged deed.”
“I know.”
“A false trust version.”
“I know.”
“And now Daniel’s phone disappears after Grant’s office takes it.”
Evelyn’s eyes filled.
“He’s my son.”
Clara’s anger faded slightly.
“I know.”
“That doesn’t switch off.”
“No.”
Evelyn nodded.
“But it also doesn’t make facts change.”
Clara looked at her.
Evelyn whispered,
“I know.”
That was the beginning of Evelyn choosing differently.
May you like
Not abandoning Grant.
Stopping herself from explaining him away.
