Chapter 23 - Grant’s First Letter to Lily

Grant wrote from prison.

The letter passed through Clara first.

He did not ask Lily to forgive him.

Good.

He wrote:

I lied about things after your dad died because I was scared of losing power and facing what I had done. You did nothing wrong by telling the truth about the blue envelope.

Clara stopped.

Important.

You were brave at a time when adults should have made bravery unnecessary.

Clara let Lily decide.

“Do you want to read it?”

“Yes.”

She did.

Then asked,

“Can I write back?”

Clara’s instinct was no.

Then she stopped.

“What do you want to say?”

Lily shrugged.

“Dad still loved you.”

Clara’s eyes filled.

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

She wrote three sentences.

No more.

Grant received them.

Read them once.

Then again.

He did not reply immediately.

For once, he let a gift exist without taking more.
