Chapter 17 - The Indictment

Nearly nine months after Daniel’s death, prosecutors filed charges against Grant related to financial misconduct and fraudulent documents.

No television raid.

Grant surrendered through counsel.

Booked.

Released under conditions while proceedings continued.

Evelyn waited outside.

Not to interfere.

To drive him home.

He got into the car.

Neither spoke for several miles.

Then:

“You came.”

“I said I would.”

“You think I’m guilty.”

“I think you did things you need to answer for.”

“That’s lawyer language.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“That’s mother language without lying.”

Grant stared out the window.

“Daniel would hate me.”

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

“I don’t know.”

“He knew.”

“He wanted you stopped.”

“Same thing.”

“No.”

She pulled into his apartment lot.

“Daniel’s draft letter said he thought you could come back.”

Grant turned.

“What letter?”

Evelyn told him.

Grant covered his face.

For the first time, the brother he had spent years competing against became the brother he had lost.

Not prosecutor.

Not rival.

Brother.

May you like

His grief had been buried beneath defense.

Now it arrived.
