Chapter 14 - Clara Finds Daniel’s Unsent Message

Daniel’s personal phone contained a scheduled email that never sent.
Not mysterious.
His email app saved drafts.
Clara found one addressed to her.
Subject:
Tonight. No more secrets.
Drafted the morning he died.
Clara stared for nearly ten minutes before opening it.
Clara,
I owe you the truth about Grant and the company. I kept saying I would handle it first because I didn’t want our marriage contaminated by business. That was arrogant. Marriage means you get to decide what you can handle, not me.
Clara stopped.
Exactly the anger she had carried.
Daniel had realized it.
Too late.
She kept reading.
I’m meeting the board Monday. Tonight I’m telling you everything. After that, we tell Mom about the marriage this weekend. If she gets dramatic, Lily gets to referee.
Clara laughed through tears.
I love you. I am sorry I confused protecting you with excluding you.
The email ended unfinished.
No grand goodbye.
No prediction of death.
Just a man expecting to come home that evening and do better.
That hurt more than any final letter.
Because life interrupted repair.
Clara printed it.
Not for court.
For herself.
She showed Lily only the funny line.
“Dad said I referee?”
“Yes.”
“What does that mean?”
“He thought you bossed everybody.”
“I do.”
True.
The unsent message changed Clara’s grief.
Daniel had not died believing secrecy was right.
He had been on his way back toward honesty.

No chance to finish.
Clara could carry anger and love without needing either to erase the other.
